Also known as Darul Aman which means ‘Abode of Peace,’ Kedah is a state located in the northwestern part of Peninsular, Malaysia. The state is also recognized as Malaysia’s ‘rice bowl’ because its rice plains produce more than half of the country’s supply.
Composed of two parts, the mainland, and the Langkawi Archipelago, the state is an attractive destination for local and international tourists. Langkawi which consists 99 islands has many lush green forests, fantastic sea beaches and amazing landscapes making it as the state’s main attraction.
Kedah has numerous things to offer to visitors and here’s my personal list of top 10 things to do in this beautiful state. My personal pick of stuff to do are mostly in Langkawi, but there are also other destinations from the other places in Kedah.
Langkawi Islands Jet Ski Tour
If you want to explore the islands of Langkawi, but you don’t have the luxury of time, the best way to do it is to hop on a jet ski tour.
Tours usually take about four hours, and you’ll be able to discover many islands of Langkawi and enjoy the stunning beauty of nature. During the tour, you can also join different activities offered by the surrounding islands which include kayaking and banana boat ride. If you are not familiar on how to ride a jet ski, there is an option for you to be accompanied by an experienced guide.
Most of the Langkawi beach counters and hotels offer this service.
Parasailing
The beautiful archipelago of Langkawi is also an excellent destination for action water sports enthusiasts. Among the water sports that you will enjoy in this paradise is parasailing. While floating into the air, you will be able to enjoy the fantastic 360-degrees view of the area. Other operators also offer video recording services at an additional charge if you want to capture your parasailing adventure and keep the record as your souvenir.
Cable Car Ride
Among the most visited destinations in Langkawi is the Panorama Langkawi. Their top attraction is the Sky Cable Ride. It is a 20 minutes trip to the upper part of the 550 million years old Machinchang Mountain. At the middle of the three stations, you can take a walk to the viewing platform which is 650 meters above sea level, and you can take pictures of the beautiful view. The whole cable ride will give you a panoramic view of the Langkawi Islands and Southern Thailand, as well as the isolated pinnacles and cliff walls below.
SkyBridge Walk
Panorama Langkawi also houses the longest free span and arched bridge in the world. This 100 meter above the ground bridge is built at the top of Machinchang Mountain and can be accessed from the SkyCable’s top station. By walking in this unique curved bridge, you’ll get to experience watching the unique and spectacular view of Langkawi from above.
Sky Adventure Ride
Still located in Panorama Langkawi, you can also enjoy adventurous rides through rough trails at their Sky Adventure Park. They have four types of vehicles for you to chose including Kids ATV, Dirt Bike, Fat Bike, and Comos Ecoride. Each trip takes about 15 minutes and covers lots of amazing scenery. Photo sessions are also available so don’t forget to bring your camera with you!
Photo Op At 3D Art Langkawi
Featuring more than a hundred of interactive paintings created by various talented artists, 3D Art Langkawi is the biggest interactive art museum in Malaysia. The gallery exhibits artworks where visitors can interact and make different poses to capture with their cameras. The list of their theme zones includes Optical Illusion where you can see and experience how an image produces different illusions. Other themes include Aquarium Zone, Interactive Zone 1&2, Safari Zone, and more.
Canopy Walk At Sedim River Recreation Park
Located in Kulim, this 950 meters long tree top canopy walk is the longest in the world. It is also one of the most-visited tourist destinations in the state of Kedah. You will enjoy the spectacular view of flora and fauna, as well as the rushing streams below from 50 meters above the ground. Besides canopy walk, Sedim River Recreation Park is also famous as a perfect place for picnics and other water activities including water rafting which is on our 8th list.
White Water River Rafting
Aside from the popular canopy walk, Sedim River is also famous for hosting the white water river rafting. It is known as one of the world’s best known heart-stopping water rapids. In this type adventurous water sports, you need to exert your energy in paddling along the 15 kilometers long of fast flowing water. Besides water rafting, you can also join other activities such as tubing, camping and jungle trekking.
Spending a day with the whole family or friends in this adrenaline pumping activity is an excellent opportunity to enjoy nature.
Landmark Spotting At Setar Tower
This 165.5-meter tower is a well-known landmark in Kedah and recognized as one of the world’s tallest telecommunications towers. While on the tower’s deck view, you will see not only the beauty of the developing city of Alor Setar but also the neighboring country of Thailand. Besides sighting the breathtaking view, you can also dine at Seri Angkasa Revolving Restaurant located at the top of the tower. They serve a variety of mouthwatering local dishes as well as international cuisines.
Shop At Pekan Rabu
Pekan Rabu or Wednesday Market is among the famous attractions to locals and tourists who are looking for a place to buy traditional Malay Food such as garam belacan and serunding. The market does sell not only varieties of food but also a wide range of apparel and handicraft products.
Pekan Rabu is open as early as 8 am including festivals and public holidays.
